Plastic soep en een gekookt eitje alsjeblieft / Plastic soup and a boiled egg please

If you think we only catch fish and benthos at the IBTS, you are wrong. Each haul also contains some waste. Most of this waste is plastic. All waste is collected from the catch and of course put in the bin. But first we register it. Just like with the fish and benthos, we determine the type of waste, measure its size, note if it contains any growth of marine organisms and weigh this. This part of the survey is commissioned by the Dutch government as part of the data collection for the Marine Framework Directive.

So what waste do we catch? The topscore is held by the orange Dolly-ropes (in Dutch: 'pluis') fishermen use to protect their nets against wear-and-tear. The Dutch fishing industry is investigating possibilities for an biodegradable alternative. It would really make a huge difference in the plastic catch if that were to be successful! We also catch other fisheries-related waste, such as little pieces of string, rope and nets. In the category food packaging, remains of crisp bags are very popular (salt&vinegar on the English continental shelf). People also like to throw cheese packaging overboard: cheddar cheese and fromage de Normandie. Some marine species obviously don’t mind the plastic for a home. We find fish eggs and hydroids. Particularly the smaller mesh fish nets seem to be a good habitat. The most bizarre piece of waste we found on the belt on this trip? A boiled egg. It turned out to be a joke by the crew...
